About the name

Aubrey comes through Middle English and Norman French from the Latin form of the Old High German Alberich, built from words for 'elf, fairy' and 'king, ruler'. It may also have been influenced by the Gaulish Albiorīx, and that is where the meaning often given for it, 'ruler of the world', comes from.

Two syllables, said AW-bree, with the stress on the first. Aubriella, Aubrielle and Aubreigh are listed as related forms.

It is chiefly a Canadian and Australian choice, ranking among the top 100 in British Columbia and Queensland and also used in Ontario. It is not recorded in continental European rankings. Canadian records place its peak in 2014, and it is now falling in more regions than it is rising.
