About the name
Ingrid comes from Old Norse Ingríðr, a contracted form of Ingifríðr. The first part is the divine name Ing, another name for the god Yngvi, and the second continues fríðr, 'beautiful, fair'.
Read the restShow less
Two syllables, said ING-grid, with the stress on the first. Inga and Inge are short forms from the same root. Ingerid, Inger and Íngrid are related forms, and Icelandic Ingiríður shows the older shape of the name.
The name is chiefly Scandinavian. It is a top-20 name in Norway and well used in Denmark and Sweden, but rare in English-speaking countries, with only small numbers in England and Wales. French records put its peak in the 1970s, yet in Norway it remains firmly current rather than dated.

Etymology
Inherited from Old Norse Ingríðr, a contracted variant of Ingiríðr, itself a variant of the fuller Ingifríðr. The first element is the divine name Ing, another name of Yngvi, while the second ultimately continues fríðr (“beautiful, fair”). The fuller form is also reflected in Ingfrid. Compare Danish Ingrid, Swedish Ingrid, Icelandic Ingiríður and Faroese Ingirið (“female given name”).
