About the name

A variant of Amalia, Amelia is built from Germanic compound names that begin with *amalą, 'vigor, bravery'. Over the centuries it has often been confused with the Latin Aemilia, the source of Emily and Emilia, though the two are separate names.

Read the restShow less

Its four syllables, uh-MEE-lee-uh, give it a soft, rolling sound. Amélia and Amèlia are accented spellings, Amalia and Amalie are close relatives, and Melia is a shorter variant.

Australia has taken to it strongly: Amelia is the second most popular girls' name in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. It is also well used in Estonia and Poland, and it is climbing in more places than it is falling. In the French records its peak came in 2023.
