About the name
Alice came into English through Old French Alys from Old High German Adalheid, the same name that gave Adelaide. Its two Germanic parts are thought to mean 'noble' and 'character'.
Read the restShow less
It has two syllables, AL-is, and a neat, classic shape. Alicia, Alix and Alison are related forms, and Adele and Heidi share the same root.
Alice is a top-ten name in Sweden, Italy and France and ranks fourth in Quebec, but it is less prominent in the rest of the English-speaking world. The French records place its peak in 2016, though across all the places where it is tracked it has been easing in more than it is rising. It remains a well-loved classic in much of Europe.
