About the name

Eve, the first woman in the Book of Genesis, gives this name its story, and Eva is the Latin form of hers. It reached Latin through the Greek Eua, from the Biblical Hebrew Chawwa, and goes back to a Semitic root meaning 'to live', related to the Hebrew chai, 'alive'.

Eva is pronounced EE-vuh in English and has two syllables and a clean, classic shape. Its family is large: Eve and Evie in English, Ewa in Polish, Eeva in Finnish and Ieva in Lithuanian, plus Evita and Evelin.

Few names travel as easily across Europe. Eva is near the top in Estonia and Croatia and ranks high in Slovenia. In the English-speaking world it does best in Quebec, and it is also well liked in Ontario and in England and Wales. In France it peaked around 2003 and has been drifting gently down since, while remaining a familiar choice.

Vulgate Latin Eva, from Greek Eua, from Biblical Hebrew Chawwa (Eve), a Latinate variant of Eve. The Hebrew entry derives it from Proto-Semitic *hyw "to live", cognate with chai "alive".
