About the name

Nadia has two separate roots. It can be the French spelling of the Russian Nadya, a pet form of Nadezhda, 'hope', itself a translation of the Greek word for hope. It can also come from the Arabic Nadiyya, meaning 'tender'.

Said NAH-dee-uh, it has three syllables with the stress on the first. Nadja, Nadine and Nadège are related forms while Nadzieja and Nadija are forms used in other languages.

Nadia is a top-40 name in Poland and is also used in Italy and Slovenia, as well as in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Ontario. In France it was at its height around 1977, and it is now falling in many of the places where it appears and rising in none.
