About the name
Fatima is an Arabic name built on the root f-t-m, which carries the sense 'to wean'. Some Shia tradition also links the name with Fatir, 'creator', one of the names of God. It is used by Muslims, and also by Catholics in honour of Our Lady of Fatima, so it belongs to two faiths at once.

In English it is usually said FAT-ih-muh, with three syllables and the stress at the start. Fatimah and Fathima are common alternative spellings, while Fatma, Fatemeh and Fatuma are forms used in other languages.
The name is spread unusually widely. It ranks inside the top 100 in Ontario, England and Wales, Catalonia and Italy, and it is also used in Scotland and across Spain. In France it has been in use for generations and reached its highest point in 2024, and it is rising in more places than it is falling.
