About the name

A Norwegian variant of Emilia, Emilie goes back to the Latin Aemilia, the feminine form of the Roman family name Aemilius. That name is traditionally connected with aemulus, 'eager; emulating, rivaling'. The spelling can also echo French Émilie, or be read as a feminine of Emil.

Three syllables, said EM-ih-lee, with the stress on the first. Emmy and Milla are natural short forms. Relatives include Emily, Emilia, Emelie and Emmi.

Norway is where it is most loved, as a top-20 name there. It is also used in Switzerland, Austria, Quebec and Scotland. French records put its peak around 1985, and it is declining in about half of the regions where it appears, so it is a name of that decade that remains well used in Scandinavia.
