About the name
Elise came into English from French and German, where it grew up as a shorter form of Elisabeth. Elisabeth is ultimately a Hebrew name, borne in the Bible by the mother of John the Baptist, and Elise carries that heritage in a lighter form. No separate meaning is attested for Elise itself.

It has two syllables, eh-LEES, with the stress on the second. Élise is the French spelling and Elyse an English variant, while Lise is the obvious short form. Elisa, Eliza and Elisabet are close relatives.
The name is especially loved in Scandinavia: it is a top-100 name in Sweden and Norway, and it is well used in the Netherlands and in Canada. In France it peaked around 2001. It is now falling in more places than it is rising, which gives it the feel of a settled, familiar classic rather than a newcomer.
