About the name
Elisa has two paths into use. It is a spelling variant of the French Elise, and in Danish, Finnish and Italian it is a short or everyday form of Elisabeth or Elisabetta. Either way it leads back to Elisabeth, a name of Hebrew origin, and no meaning of its own is attested.

Said eh-LEE-suh, it has three syllables with the stress in the middle. Lisa is its obvious short form, and Elise, Eliza, Elsa and Elissa are all close relatives.
Elisa is far more popular in continental Europe than in English-speaking countries. It is a top-10 name in Turkey and ranks highly in Austria and Italy, while in Quebec, England and Wales and Ireland it is used but uncommon. In France it reached its peak around 2003, and today it is rising and falling in roughly equal measure across the places where it appears.
