About the name

Diana comes from Latin, from an older form Divana, and is related to a Proto-Italic word meaning 'goddess'. It began as the name of an old Italic divinity of light and the moon, and later became the Roman counterpart of the Greek Artemis, the huntress goddess.

Read the restShow less

It has three syllables, dy-AN-uh, with the stress in the middle. Diane is the French-style form, and Dayana, Daiana and Dajana are spellings found in other languages.

In Canada, Diana is above all a name of the late 1950s. It has since found fresh favour in continental Europe: it is one of the most popular girls' names in Italy and is well used in Switzerland and Poland. In Ireland, Ontario and British Columbia it is given more quietly, and overall it is rising in more places than it is falling, so this classical name is far from finished.
