About the name

Amaya comes from literature. It is the heroine of the Spanish historical novel Amaya o los vascos del siglo VIII by F. Navarro Villoslada, and the name is explained there as Basque amai, 'the end'.

Read the restShow less

Three syllables, said uh-MY-uh, with the stress in the middle. Amaia is the Basque spelling, and Anaya and Maya are similar in sound.

It is climbing in every region where it is tracked and falling in none. It is used in British Columbia, England and Wales, and Quebec, and on the continent in Switzerland, the Netherlands and France. French records show a first appearance back in the 1940s but a peak only in 2025, so it has spent most of its history as a rare name and only recently become a popular one.
