About the name

Latin lūna means 'the moon', and the word passed into Middle English in the same sense. In Roman mythology Luna is also the moon personified.

Read the restShow less

Two syllables, LOO-nuh, give it a soft, round sound. Lua, Lune and Louna are related forms, Lúna is an accented spelling, and Lunella is a longer variant.

Luna ranks high across the Netherlands, Switzerland and Denmark and is well used in British Columbia and Ontario. It is rising in nearly three times as many places as it is falling, and the French records put its peak in 2022. Its combination of a simple sound and a clear image has made it a favourite across many languages at once.
