About the name

The first known Eleanor was Eleanor of Aquitaine, whose name in Provençal was Aliénor. It is perhaps from Latin alia, 'other', combined with her mother's name Aenor, giving the explanation 'the other Aenor'; that meaning is uncertain.

It has three syllables, EL-uh-nor. Ellie, Nell, Nellie and Nora are its familiar short forms, and Elinor, Eleonora and Leonora are related spellings.

Eleanor ranks high in Ontario, British Columbia and New South Wales, and is much less common in continental Europe. In the Ontario and British Columbia records it peaked in 1936, and it is now rising in ten places while falling in only one, a strong revival of an older favourite.
