Florence came into English from French, and before that from Latin Flōrentia, a feminine form of Flōrentius. The root is flōrens, 'flowering, flourishing', from flōs, 'flower'. The name gained its popularity from Florence Nightingale, who was born in the Tuscan city of the same name.

Borrowed from French Florence, from Latin Flōrentia (as a given name, a feminine form of Flōrentius), from flōrens (“flowering, flourishing”), from flōs (“flower”), connected with English bloom and blossom.
