About the name

Ida began as a short form of old Germanic names beginning with īd, 'work', used for both sexes in medieval England. It was revived in the 19th century, partly because it was mistaken for a Greek name, after Mount Ida of classical mythology. Its roots are also given as Sanskrit.

Two syllables, EYE-duh, give it a short, strong sound. Ída is an accented spelling, and Iida, Ita and Yda are variants.

Ida is a top-twenty name in Denmark and is used in Austria and Norway, while in the English-speaking world it sits far down the lists. The French records place its peak in the 1920s, and its trend today is evenly balanced.
