About the name

Across much of Europe, Marta is the usual form of Martha, and it shares that name's Aramaic meaning, 'mistress', in the sense of lady of the house. It was first recorded as a Latvian given name in 1591. In the New Testament, Martha is the sister of Mary and Lazarus.

Two syllables, said MAR-tuh, with the stress on the first. Märta is the Swedish spelling, and Martha, Marthe, Martina and Martyna are relatives.

It is a top-10 name in Croatia and Estonia and well used in Italy. English-speaking countries use it rarely, with small numbers in England and Wales and Ontario. French records show its peak came recently, and it is rising in some regions and falling in others, so it remains a steady European classic.
